As Ethan Hunt is on the case of a mysterious organisation called the Syndicate and reveals them as real. However, as the Syndicate gets the upper hand, IMF gets closed down by the the CIA. On the run, hunted by his own country, Ethan must prove the Syndicate's existence and stop them from obtaining the ability to free rein across the world, while reviving the IMF in the process.

After the team are set up, ending in the destruction of the Kremlin, the IMF are blamed and disavowed, leaving Ethan and the remainder of the team to prevent nuclear war on their own without back up or support.

When his first protégé is caught in action, Ethan gets tempted back in to rescue her and obtain data on art dealer Owen Davian. After the mission fails, Ethan is caught back in the game with his own personal life jeopardised as the stakes get personal as well as high.

Fresh from Face/Off, Woo was a chosen as a director with his unique visual style to give this sequel a definite favour. In order to stop a virus falling into the wrong hands of MI agent gone bad, Sean Ambrose, Ethan Hunt must recruit a former love interest of Ambrose, Nyah, to require intel. However, making this mission even more impossible, Hunt and Nyah develop romantic feeling for each other, taking the stakes to more personal levels.
